Deputy Jack Evans Shot During Traffic Stop in Peoria, IL on February 1, 2026 – Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder

On February 1, 2026, Deputy Jack Evans of the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office was shot during a traffic stop in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue in Peoria, Illinois. The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. when Evans initiated a stop involving three individuals. Prosecutors stated that one of the passengers fled on foot, prompting Evans to pursue him for about a block before rounding a corner and encountering gunfire at close range.

Authorities allege the suspect fired multiple shots, striking Deputy Evans in the abdomen and legs. Despite being wounded, Evans engaged the suspect before additional deputies located the individual hiding in a nearby abandoned building. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The accused faces an attempted murder charge and could face life imprisonment if convicted.
