Deputy Kaleb Cherne Identified in Cass County, Minnesota Shooting on November 16, 2025

Authorities have released additional details regarding the Cass County shooting that occurred on Sunday afternoon, November 16, 2025, in Turtle Lake Township, Minnesota. Deputies responded to reports of gunfire around 4:30 p.m. and encountered 37-year-old James Weyaus walking along County Road 13. According to investigators, Weyaus fled on foot, prompting Deputy Kaleb Cherne to pursue. During the pursuit, an exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in Cherne sustaining a gunshot wound to the upper right thigh.

A second deputy, David Donner, arrived shortly after and engaged the suspect when he reentered the roadway, fatally shooting Weyaus. Authorities recovered a handgun, holster, and multiple shell casings at the scene. Deputy Cherne was transported to a Fargo hospital and has since been released, with officials confirming he is expected to make a full recovery. Both deputies have been placed on standard critical incident leave while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continues its investigation, supported by body camera footage captured during the event.
