On July 31, 2025, 53-year-old Kimberly Jean Jespersen was fatally struck while crossing 4500 South at State Street in a marked crosswalk in Murray, Utah. According to police reports, an initial minor collision occurred between Jespersen and a gray Chevrolet hatchback, which stopped briefly at the scene. Moments later, a GMC Sierra pickup driven by 24-year-old Nathan Michael Portillo swerved and struck Jespersen before fleeing the area. She later died at a hospital.

Portillo, described by authorities as a habitual DUI offender, was arrested in October following an extensive investigation that included witness statements and cellphone data.
