Mary Ptaszenski Killed in New Bedford, Massachusetts Crash on February 6, 2026; Dartmouth Man Charged with OUI Homicide

On February 6, 2026, Mary Ptaszenski, 70, of New Bedford, was killed after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Route 18 North and Coggeshall Street. The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the city’s Near North End. According to the office of Thomas M. Quinn III, two women were hit by the same vehicle and transported to a local hospital. Ptaszenski later died from her injuries, while the second victim was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities identified the driver as Andrew Johansen, 34, of Dartmouth. He has been charged with motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence and negligence. Johansen was arraigned in New Bedford District Court, where bail was set at $5,000 with conditions including GPS monitoring, a curfew, and a requirement to remain alcohol-free if released. The incident remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the district attorney’s office and the New Bedford Police Department.
