Tamico McDaniels and Nickolas Smith Die at Spokane County Jail on December 19, 2025 | Inmate Overdose Deaths Under Investigation

Two inmates who died while in custody at the Spokane County Jail were formally identified on December 19, 2025, as Tamico McDaniels, 50, and Nickolas Smith, 48, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. Both men died following separate overdose incidents inside the facility, with authorities confirming that the cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

Reports indicate the first inmate was booked into the jail on Sunday and was later found unresponsive. Despite the administration of Narcan and extensive life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:50 a.m. The second inmate, booked on December 7, also overdosed and was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m. following a full medical response. Officials stated the incidents occurred on different floors of the jail and were not connected. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate as toxicology results are pending.
