Trooper Justin Mitchell Injured in I-90 Crash in Schenectady County, NY – June 6, 2025
On June 6, 2025, New York State Trooper Justin T. Mitchell, age 27, was injured during a traffic stop on the westbound side of the New York State Thruway at mile marker 167 in the town of Rotterdam, Schenectady County. While standing on the passenger side of a Honda Odyssey minivan, Trooper Mitchell was struck after a 2020 Western Star truck, operated by 66-year-old John T. Aesch of Gloversville, veered off the roadway and collided with the rear of the patrol vehicle. The impact pushed the patrol car into the minivan and resulted in Mitchell being thrown over a guardrail and down an embankment.
Trooper Mitchell sustained multiple lacerations and a shoulder injury. He was treated at Albany Medical Center and has since been released. The driver and passenger of the Honda Odyssey were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam with minor injuries. Aesch was also taken to Albany Medical Center for evaluation. The investigation remains active, and no citations have been issued at this time.
