Alan Herrarte Dies in Atascosa County Mudslide
On May 1, 2025, Alan Herrarte, a worker at Signal Peak Silica in Atascosa County, Texas, died following a mudslide incident. The event occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. near Highway 16 in northern Atascosa County, where Herrarte was operating heavy equipment at the bottom of an 80 to 90-foot deep sand pit. Authorities report that the mudslide overturned his equipment and filled the cab with sand and mud, resulting in his death. His body was recovered at around 4:55 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, after emergency crews responded to the scene.
The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office attributes the collapse to recent weather conditions that likely saturated the sand, causing instability. Sheriff Jake Guerra described the incident as “an avalanche at a sand plant.” An investigation into the safety conditions at the site and the contributing weather factors is currently underway. No additional information has been disclosed as of this time.
