Gladys Newstrand Involved in Car Accident on I35 in Carlton County

On June 15, 2025, at approximately 11:23 a.m., a traffic accident occurred on northbound Interstate 35 near the Culkin Rest Area in Mahtowa Township, Carlton County, Minnesota. A 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, driven by John Karl Newstrand, 77, of Little Canada, Minnesota, was exiting the highway when it veered off the roadway and struck several trees. The Minnesota State Patrol reported that the road conditions were dry at the time of the incident. Both the driver, John Newstrand, and the passenger, Gladys Marie Newstrand, also 77, of Little Canada, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to St. Mary's Hospital for medical attention.

The Minnesota State Patrol District 2700 Duluth is conducting the investigation, with assistance from the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, Essentia Ambulance, Mahtowa Fire and Rescue, and Barnum Fire Department. No further details regarding the cause of the accident or the condition of the individuals have been released.
