Torrance Bishop Dies in Athens-Clarke County Jail

On April 22, 2025, Torrance Bernard Bishop, a 39-year-old Black male inmate, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Athens-Clarke County Jail in Athens, Georgia, during routine morning checks at approximately 7:55 a.m. He was pronounced dead shortly before 10:00 a.m. Bishop had been in custody since November 2024, facing charges of entering auto, trespassing, and loitering. In January 2025, a Superior Court judge mandated a mental evaluation prior to his trial; however, it remains uncertain whether this evaluation was conducted. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his death, classified as a medical emergency.
