Anabelle Martinez Seriously Injured in January 19, 2026 Semi Collision Near Northfield, Minnesota; Classmate Killed

On January 19, 2026, Anabelle Martinez, a 16-year-old student at Northfield High School, was seriously injured in a collision with a semi-truck northwest of Northfield. The crash occurred near the intersection of 320th Street and Foliage Avenue when the Lexus in which Martinez was a passenger collided with the semi. Her classmate, 16-year-old Berlyn Berghuis, who was driving, died at the scene.

Martinez sustained critical injuries and was transported to a Minneapolis hospital, where she has remained under intensive medical care. She was admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit and continues to undergo treatment as her recovery progresses. The collision has had a marked impact on the Northfield community, as classmates and families confront both the loss of a student and the ongoing hospitalization of another.
