Corey Mitchell Killed in Coles County, Illinois Tractor-Trailer Collision – October 2, 2025
On October 2, 2025, a fatal collision involving a commercial tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle occurred at the intersection of County Road 1200 N and County Road 300 E in Coles County, Illinois. At approximately 5:30 p.m., a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 35-year-old Corey Mitchell of Mattoon was struck on the driver’s side by an International tractor-trailer. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the Tahoe—a 37-year-old Mattoon woman and a 5-year-old child—were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana with injuries. The truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Gays, Illinois, received a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The Illinois State Police are assisting the Coles County Sheriff's Office in the ongoing investigation.
