Corey Mitchell of Mattoon, IL Dies in Coles County Crash – October 1, 2025

On the evening of October 1, 2025, a fatal vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of County Road 1200 N and County Road 300 E in Coles County, Illinois. Corey Mitchell, a 35-year-old resident of Mattoon, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving was struck on the driver’s side by an International semi-truck. The semi-truck was operated by 59-year-old Michael Emmerich of Gays, Illinois.

According to the Coles County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 5:26 p.m. Two other occupants in Mitchell’s vehicle — a 37-year-old woman and a 5-year-old child, both from Mattoon — were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Their current conditions have not been disclosed. Emmerich was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid the collision. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities with assistance from the Illinois State Police.
