Death of Anthony Garza in Chatham County Jail: Savannah, GA – October 14, 2025
The death of 67-year-old Anthony Garza at the Chatham County Jail has prompted formal review by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Garza, who had been incarcerated since May on charges of failing to register as a sex offender and violating probation, reported abdominal pain on the evening of October 10 before being evaluated by jail medical staff. Despite plans to transport him to a hospital, he was later found unresponsive in his cell, and lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
Authorities confirmed that Garza, a homeless individual with pre-existing medical conditions, was pronounced dead at the jail. An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler. Garza had previously been convicted of child molestation in 2006 and was classified as a level 2 sex offender. The investigation remains active as officials continue efforts to locate family members and review the circumstances surrounding his death.
