On December 25, 2025, Fire Chief David Haverdink of Hamilton, Michigan, died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while performing his official duties. The incident occurred on the evening of December 23 along M-40 in Allegan County as Chief Haverdink responded to a medical emergency near the village of Hamilton, approximately ten miles south of Holland. He was transported for medical care but succumbed to his injuries on Christmas Day.

Chief Haverdink, 74, devoted nearly sixty years to public service, including more than five decades with the Hamilton Fire Department and over forty years as its chief.
