Fatal Crash on U.S. Highway 169, Minnesota Claims Life of Firaol Abebe Mebratu

On Friday morning, April 02, 2025, a tragic incident occurred on southbound U.S. Highway 169 near Shakopee, Minnesota, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Firaol Abebe Mebratu of Marshall. The State Patrol reported that at approximately 6 a.m., an SUV driver, upon noticing a stalled vehicle on the right shoulder near Old Brick Yard Road, shifted to the left lane, where Mebratu was standing. The SUV struck Mebratu, and he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed whether Mebratu was associated with the stalled vehicle.

The crash prompted the closure of southbound Highway 169 for several hours, with traffic rerouted at the Old Brick Yard Road exit until the highway reopened at 8:45 a.m. The two occupants of the SUV sustained no physical injuries, and the northbound lanes remained unaffected throughout the incident. The State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal collision.
