Licia Gonzalez and Jose Serrano Injured in Edmonds Ferry Dock Accident

On June 17, 2025, a high-speed chase concluded tragically at the Edmonds ferry dock in Edmonds, Washington, when a Mini Cooper, driven by 29-year-old William G. Leonard of Tulalip, plunged into the water after evading law enforcement. The incident began at approximately 11:10 p.m. when Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers clocked the vehicle traveling at 79 mph in a 60-mph zone on Interstate 5, initiating a brief pursuit that was terminated shortly after. Snohomish County deputies later resumed the chase in Edmonds, where the Mini Cooper exceeded 100 mph, ignored an attempted traffic stop, breached a barrier at the ferry dock, and submerged, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

Among the injured were Licia T. Gonzalez, 30, of Auburn, and Jose L. Serrano, 38, of Federal Way, both of whom were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. The driver, Leonard, also sustained injuries and was taken to the same facility. Two passengers, Melanie E. Ross, 48, of Auburn, and Portsha C. Sapp, 45, of Lakewood, were pronounced dead at the scene. The WSP suspects that drugs and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, and an investigation is underway to determine potential charges against the driver. The Edmonds-Kingston ferry route was temporarily closed following the incident.
