Mark Gesswein Killed in Motorcycle Crash Following Alleged Pursuit in Rockford, Illinois
On the morning of September 5, 2025, a fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Rockford, Illinois, resulting in the death of 45-year-old Mark Gesswein. According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 9:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Monroe Street, near Ingersoll Golf Course. Upon arrival, authorities found Gesswein deceased at the scene.
Investigators determined that Gesswein was being pursued by 40-year-old Jose E. Olivencia III, who had reported two of his motorcycles stolen earlier that day. Olivencia allegedly recognized one of the stolen motorcycles being driven by Gesswein and began chasing him in a red minivan. During the pursuit, Olivencia is reported to have attempted to force Gesswein off the road, causing the crash. Olivencia has since been charged with First Degree Murder. The Winnebago County Major Crash Assistance Team is continuing its investigation.
