Richard Bennett Fatally Struck by SUV Near Six Flags in Gurnee, Illinois

On the evening of June 17, 2025, at approximately 10:08 p.m., a fatal incident occurred on Washington Street near the entrance to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois. Richard Bennett, a 59-year-old resident of Gurnee, was struck by an SUV while walking in the eastbound lanes of the roadway. Emergency responders from the Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department arrived promptly at the scene, where paramedics discovered Bennett unresponsive and suffering from severe trauma. Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek pronounced him deceased at the location, and an autopsy conducted on June 18, 2025, determined that the cause of death was blunt force injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the authorities. Two occupants of the vehicle were assessed by paramedics but declined further medical treatment. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was summoned to support the Gurnee Police Department’s investigation, necessitating a five-hour closure of Washington Street. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review, with no definitive cause yet established.
