Shania Ponce and Karim Zapana-Turpo Killed in DUI Crash on SR 410

On July 27, 2025, a fatal head-on collision occurred on State Route 410 in Sumner, Washington, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the arrest of one suspect on DUI vehicular homicide charges. The victims, identified as Shania M. Ponce, 30, and Karim D. Zapana-Turpo, 53, both residents of Buckley, were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, a 50-year-old woman from Kent, was arrested after being transported to a local hospital.According to the Washington State Patrol, the suspect was driving the wrong way on State Route 167 and then on SR 410 before colliding head-on with the victims' vehicle. The incident caused significant traffic disruptions, with westbound lanes closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene.
