Tragic Loss: Officer Krystal Rivera Killed in Chicago Shooting

On June 5, 2025, Officer Krystal Rivera of the Chicago Police Department was fatally shot during a confrontation with armed subjects. The incident took place at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue, located in the Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. While conducting a routine patrol, officers attempted to stop an individual suspected of possessing a weapon. The suspect fled into an apartment building, where a second armed individual was encountered. In the resulting disorder, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Officer Rivera.

Officer Rivera was initially placed into a patrol vehicle for transport to a medical facility. During transit, the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure and ignited. She was subsequently moved to another vehicle and pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital. The two suspects involved in the incident fled but were apprehended shortly thereafter. Officer Rivera had been a member of the Chicago Police Department for four years and leaves behind a daughter.
