Authorities in Appling County have confirmed that 86-year-old Maria D. Nunez was found deceased outside her Baxley residence on October 8, 2025, following a fatal dog attack. Deputies and emergency personnel responded to Poplar Lane around noon, where they located Nunez with multiple injuries consistent with a violent mauling. Her body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Pooler for autopsy.
Investigators state that two dogs attacked Nunez, and both animals have since been identified and secured. The dogs did not belong to the victim, and their owners are expected to face criminal charges as the investigation continues. The Appling County Sheriff’s Office and the county coroner are overseeing the ongoing case as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
