A line-of-duty death claimed the life of Officer Stephen LaPorta of the Uxbridge Police Department in the early morning hours of January 7, 2026. Authorities reported that Officer LaPorta, 43, was struck by a vehicle on northbound Route 146 near Exit 6 while assisting a disabled motorist during freezing rain conditions. The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m.
A tractor-trailer traveling through the area struck Officer LaPorta as he worked along the roadway. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. Officer LaPorta had served with the Uxbridge Police Department for just over one year and is survived by his wife and child.
